Alex Hamlin – Saxophones, Woodwinds, Composition
Alex’s arsenal of instruments includes the baritone, tenor, alto, soprano saxophones, flute, piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet and bassoon. He is comfortable in any setting, whether the group is a bolly-wood-second-line brass band, choreographed 12 person street band, big band, broadway pit, symphonic orchestra, large and small contemporary classical chamber groups, afrobeat group, and rock bands.
Performing in NYC and abroad throughout Japan, India, Russia, Europe and North America, Alex has shared the stage with SPOON, Duffy on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”, St. Vincent on “Late Show with David Letterman”, Yo La Tengo, The Radio City Orchestra, Fela! Asphalt Orchestra, Red Baraat, The Spirit of Ray Charles, European tour of Grease, ICE, Fireworks Ensemble, Argento Ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, Euphonique Saxophone Quartet, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Antibalas, Ralph Alessi, Shane Endsley, Colin Stetson, and Yoko Ono.
He recently recorded for The National “High Violet”, David Byrne, Alarm Will Sound “Arhythmia”, William Brittelle’s “Television Landscape”, Eric Biondo’s “Beyondo”, Little Jackie, Ben Galina’s Salo, Payton MacDonald, Project Jenny Project Jan, and Music for Picture.
He is a founding member of JERSEYBAND, AMY LYNN & THE HONEY MEN, the HOG Trio for which he composes, arranges, and co-produces. Among these projects Alex has co-produced nine CD releases.
In addition, Alex is a commissioned composer. A recent favorite, “In Search of Treats”, is a multi-media, multi-species composition for Oboe with video accompaniment. The video features his cat, Walter playing the piano, which serves as accompaniment for a through-composed Oboe part.
Alex was born and raised in Canandaigua, NY and began studying the saxophone at age 10. He earned a performance degree in Jazz and Classical Saxophone from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Ramon Ricker.
